Red is a Dogue De Bordeaux that we took out of the Austin shelter in June. He was very bloated when he came in and very lethargic. He was put on strong medication which seemed to work. Red was adopted to a great home, but unfortunately, after about a month time we received a call that Red's condition got bad again. He was so bad that the adopter's vet suggested euthanasia.
We took Red back to try and figure out if we could save him. Red was taken to Central Texas Specialty Hospital and after a few tests and two ultrasounds, the vet said that Red probably has a bad case of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Next step is to try and figure out the cause and course of treatment, so Red will get better. We will need to do a biopsy of the intestines, which costs $1,200.
So far Red's been to three different Vets. We did numerous blood tests, diarrhea panel and two ultrasounds. We spent close to $1,000 and yet to know what is wrong with him. He is on a strict low-fat diet and he is taking a ton of meds including Baytril, Lasix, Steroids and probiotics. He seems to be doing better and he is not as bloated (like he swallowed a pumpkin), but we are still not sure what is wrong with him. Vet is suspecting Crohn's disease, which is not treatable, but can be managed with a special high protein, low-fat diet and expensive meds. The biopsy will give us an answer to what he has and what meds will be best for him.
We are seeking donations to help get Red the help he needs.
